What is a reborn doll?
· Dollnest nursery, Bristol
What reborn dolls are, how they are made, who buys them and how they differ from an ordinary baby doll.

A reborn doll is a baby doll finished by hand to look and feel like a newborn. The word describes the process rather than a brand: an artist takes a blank kit and gives it skin tones, fine veins, soft blushing, hair and weight, until it holds the light the way real skin does.
How a reborn baby is made
Every baby goes through the same careful stages, and each one takes hours:
- Painting. Many thin layers build up skin tone, blushing at the knees and knuckles, and the faint mottling newborn skin has. Each layer is set before the next goes on.
- Detailing. Nails, lips and creases are painted last, because they carry most of the realism.
- Hair. Hair is either painted on or rooted a few strands at a time — see our guide to reborn doll hair.
- Weighting and assembly. Soft filling and fine glass or steel beads bring the body to a newborn weight, and the limbs are joined so the baby settles into your arms.
What makes them different from a baby doll
An ordinary baby doll is moulded and painted by machine, in one piece, to a price. A reborn is finished one at a time, which is why no two are identical and why the weight, the floppiness and the skin tone feel so different when you hold one.
Who buys them
Collectors, people who love newborn photography, parents and grandparents buying a keepsake gift, and adults who simply find them comforting. They are also used in memory and comfort settings, where holding something of a newborn's weight and warmth helps. They are not toys for very young children — see ages and safety.
Choosing between them
The biggest practical decision is the body: full silicone, vinyl with a cloth body, or a weighted cloth body. They feel completely different in the arms and sit at different prices. Our comparison sets them side by side, and how to choose your first reborn walks through size, weight and budget.

Care is simple but specific to the material: full silicone here, vinyl and cloth body here. Both take minutes, not hours.
